Cultivating Creativity with Yoga and Meditation

How creative are you? How do you know? How can you discover and develop your real creative powers? Creativity emerges from our most distinctive powers as human beings. In imagination, we can visit the past, we can anticipate the future, and we can see beyond our immediate circumstances to other possible ways of being. Creativity grows from imagination, but it is a step beyond it. Creativity is the practical process of putting your imagination to work. Real creativity involves an application, purpose, and an appropriate balance between freedom and control, between known and unknown, between intellect and intuition.

We all are creative. We all are capable of accessing Kundalini, the creative energy that is laying latent in the base of our spines. Managing our energy, quieting our minds and connecting to the infinite source are the keys to creativity.

Creativity arises naturally in states of Shuniya, the point of stillness and presence, which can be elusive when we are distracted by our monkey mind. This is why Kundalini yoga and meditation is such a gift for cultivating creativity. When we practice kriyas, Pranayam, meditation, and chanting Mantras, we learn to access a zero point of awareness.

At the most elemental level, we are not a chemical reaction but an energetic charge, frequency, and vibration.

All wisdom traditions acknowledge the infinite source of intelligence and creative energy in the universe. Vedas explain: “ As a microcosm so is macrocosm. As is the atom so is the universe. As is a human body so is a cosmic body. As is a human mind so is a cosmic mind”. This ancient wisdom is echoed in contemporary science. Physicist Carl Sagan writes:

“ We are the local embodiment of Cosmos grown to self – awareness” Neil deGrasse Tyson elaborates: “ We are in the universe and universe is in us. What nobler thought can one cherish than that the infinite universe lives within us.”

“Tune yourself with the creative power of Spirit. You will be in contact with the Infinite Intelligence that is able to guide you and to solve all problems. Power from the dynamic Source of your being will flow uninterruptedly so that you will be able to perform creatively in any sphere of activity.” – Yogananda.
